Militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, has denied claims by President Muhammadu Buhari that his administration was holding talks with the militants to ensure peace reigns in the region. In a statement issued on Friday by the group’s spokesman, Mudoch Agbinibo, the Avengers said it was not aware of any ongoing peace talks. It read, “Our attention has been drawn to media report that the President is in touch with Niger Delta agitators including the Niger Delta Avengers but the truth is that we are not aware of any peace talk. “If there is any such peace talk, it means the President is talking to their mercenaries set to disturb the genuine struggle of the agitators. “President Buhari led government is not sincere to the Nigeria people and their foreign allies. “If we are to engage in any peace talk we made it clear that the international community must be part of it. Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development Monitoring Team have arrested about four women who were begging for alms with babies less than a month old that weren’t their own. The women, Hadiza Nosiru and Salamotu Salisu, both from Jigawa State were arrested at the Oyingbo area of the State. Preliminary investigation showed that the two women apprehended are not the biological mothers of the babies but were given to them by their parents who later got paid for each baby. 40-year-old Aregbesola is one of the women arrested  for using her children to beg for alms in return for stipends. According to her , the person who hires her child always pays her between N1,000 and N1,500 daily. The woman claimed she had four other children. According to her , the first two children attend school somewhere in Ikotun area. She said: “I stay at Ijora Olopa though I am from Ibadan in Oyo State. Those who died in the accident include eight males and three females, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has confirmed. General Manager, LASEMA, Michael Akindele said the accident occurred around 6:10pm on Thursday. He said the 14-seater passenger Volkswagen commercial bus with Lagos colour lost its brake, somersaulted and busted into fire. “Eleven persons, which include three females and eight males were burnt dead. Three persons were rescued alive and were taken to the accident and emergency unit at toll gate,” he confirmed. Rotimi Amaechi, The Minister of Transportation on Thursday said passengers will not pay more than N500 per trip on the economy class from Abuja to Kaduna or vice versa, when the project is finally flagged off by next week Tuesday. Disclosing this on Thursday while answering questions during a tour of the rail project in Abuja to ascertain its readiness for public use, Amaechi said: “The passengers have asked me to bring the fare down to N500 and I think I can do that.” Originally the government had planned to  collect N900 for business class and N600 for economy class.

In a twist of fate that could yet bring succour to Nigeria and Tanzania, the Chadian Football Federation has rescinded its decision to withdraw from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers if Caf would accept it back. The Chadians announced this news via their official website on Thursday evening, four days after they threw Group G into disarray with their decision to drop out of qualifying due to financial constraints. On March 19, U.S. Marine Corps staff sergeant Louis Cardin, a field artilleryman assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit,  died during an attack  on Fire Base Bell outside of Makhmur, Iraq. Coincidentally, the U.S. Army is hard at work developing a farther-firing howitzer that could help keep artillery troops out of range of enemy forces. The Army is cooking up a suite of improvements could double the range of the existing M-777 howitzer. Right now the 155-millimeter gun, in service with the Army and Marines, can lob shells at targets up to 18 miles away. The M-777ER version the Army is working on “will be able to reach out and hit targets … before the targets can reach them,” David Bound, the lead engineer on the project at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey,  told Army reporters . A woman and others admitted they helped run a Nigerian scam that defrauded South Mississippi residents and many others through work-at-home and mystery shopper jobs and re-shipping scams. The victims were targeted through emails, online advertising, identities stolen, fake credit cards made. The ill-gotten goods and other illegal proceeds were re-shipped to Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, China, UAE, Haiti. The suspects are: Ann Louise Franzen of Kiln; Gary Barnard, Shawn Ann White and Michele Gayle Fee, all of Manteca, Calif.; and Tara Lynn Thomas of Turlock, Calif. The court records show they each pleaded guilty Tuesday, March 22 to conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States. Nigeria's health minister is urging Nigerians not to panic over an outbreak of Lassa fever that has killed 35 people. Dr. Isaac Adewole says the government has taken adequate measures to contain the outbreak, with 14 lab-confirmed cases among 76 suspected ones. Lassa, named after a Nigerian town where the acute viral hemorrhagic fever first was identified in 1969, has the same symptoms as Ebola and also requires that health workers wear protective gear and patients be isolated. Only about 1 percent of patients die. The disease is carried by rats and mostly affects rural communities with poor sanitation or crowded living conditions. It is only found in West Africa. A statement published Friday says Adewole "appeals to members of the public to be calm."
